Stages

The video below is a dance on film that my Intermediate Modern Dance group and I recorded, performed in, and edited together for our Winter 2015 Intermediate Modern Dance's "Term Movement Project."

We decided to do a dance on film because we wanted to create a story. In the beginning, we did not know what the story would be, but eventually we thought of telling a story of life and the several stages that, if lucky (or unlucky) enough, people will encounter. We each chose our favorite environment, or location on campus. From there, we thought of what worldwide theme our places as a whole could represent. We realized that life begins immersed in water, in our mother's womb. So, my group member who chose to dance in her favorite pool on campus to was the beginning of the film. I chose University of Michigan's Aboretum, which is the home to hundreds of wild, free-growing flower species. Thus, I represented the second, free-flowing stage in life, a toddler.

A different thought process took place for the last two group members. We noticied an increase in structure and confinement with the last two and believed that one (Elbel Field) was more structured than another (law quadrangle). Thus, we thought of young adulthood and adulthood for the last two girls. I am really proud of our work and finished product because we went beyond moving and became the roles of our characters on film while moving. This takes the same skill that it takes to write. Writing is storytelling, and we told a story. So, I hope that you enjoy experiencing it as much as we enjoyed creating the experience.
