Re-Mediating an Argument

The “Re-Mediating an Argument” assignment was the final project of the semester. This project challenged students to transform their “Re-Purposing an Argument” project in a new/different medium. For this project, the audience remained the same. I chose video as my new medium and decided to create a “mash-up” video of the cultural allusions that I reference in my spoken word, accompanied by the movement of myself and two other dancers. This project had three parts: a storyboard (outline), a rough cut (roughdraft), and a final cut (final draft).

In the beginning, I underestimated how difficult this project would be. Prior to starting the project, I had no experience with making videos and I did not even know what iMovie was! The rough cut, which I thought would take two hours, took nearly five hours and after I was still unsatisfied with the video! I began regretting my decision and complaining to friends about how difficult it was. It was a huge challenge for me in the beginning; however, after dedicating countless hours, (and missing several meals!), to make the storyboard, rough-cut, and final cut “perfect,” I was very proud of the outcome and of myself for taking on such a difficult task and giving it all that I had. It was difficult, but in the end gaining this new skill was worth it.

If I were given the chance to redo this project, I would do it without delay! Now that I know how to make and edit videos in iMovie and can spend less time pulling my hair out on Oblivious Island, I would spend more time on the editing process (trimming) and less on finding images and videos.

Nevertheless, I am proud of how I have grown through this project.
